ומית שמואל ואתכנישו כל ישראל וספדו עלוהי וקברוהי בביתיה ברמה וקם דוד ונחת למדברא דפארן:
dparn lmdbra wnkhth dwd wqm brmh bbythyh wqbrwhy elwhy wspdw yshral kl wathknyshw shmwal wmyth
Samuel died; and all Israel gathered themselves together and mourned for him, and buried him at his house at Ramah. Then David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

וגברא במעון ונכסוהי בכרמלא וגברא רב לחדא וליה עאן תלתא אלפין ואלף עזין והוה במיגז ית עניה בכרמלא:
bkrmla enyh yth bmygz whwh ezyn walp alpyn thltha ean wlyh lkhda rb wgbra bkrmla wnkswhy bmewn wgbra
There was a man in Maon whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great. He had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats; and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

ושום גברא נבל ושום אתתיה אביגיל ואתתא חכימת מדע ושפירת ריוו וגברא קשי וביש עובדין והוא מדבית כלב:
klb mdbyth whwa ewbdyn wbysh qshy wgbra ryww wshpyrth mde khkymth waththa abygyl aththyh wshwm nbl gbra wshwm
Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail. This woman was intelligent and had a beautiful face; but the man was surly and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.

ושמע דוד במדברא ארי גזיז נבל ית עניה:
enyh yth nbl gzyz ary bmdbra dwd wshme
David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.

ושלח דוד עשרא עולימין ואמר דוד לעולימיא סקו לכרמלא ותהכון לות נבל ותשאלון ליה בשמי לשלם:
lshlm bshmy lyh wthshalwn nbl lwth wthhkwn lkrmla sqw lewlymya dwd wamr ewlymyn eshra dwd wshlkh
David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name.

ותימרון כדין לחיך ואת שלם וביתך שלם וכל דילך שלם:
shlm dylk wkl shlm wbythk shlm wath lkhyk kdyn wthymrwn
Tell him, ‘Long life to you! Peace be to you! Peace be to your house! Peace be to all that you have!

וכען שמעית ארי גוזזין לך כען רעיא דילך הוו עמנא לא אנזיקינונון ולא שגא להון מדעם כל יומין דהוו בכרמלא:
bkrmla dhww ywmyn kl mdem lhwn shga wla anzyqynwnwn la emna hww dylk reya ken lk gwzzyn ary shmeyth wken
Now I have heard that you have shearers. Your shepherds have now been with us, and we didn’t harm them. Nothing was missing from them all the time they were in Carmel.

שאל ית עולמך ויחון לך וישכחון עולימיא רחמין בעינך ארי על יום טב אתינא הב כען ית דתשכח ידך לעבדך ולברך לדוד:
ldwd wlbrk lebdk ydk dthshkkh yth ken hb athyna Tb ywm el ary beynk rkhmyn ewlymya wyshkkhwn lk wykhwn ewlmk yth shal
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let the young men find favor in your eyes, for we come on a good day. Please give whatever comes to your hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

ואתו עולימי דוד ומלילו עם נבל ככל פתגמיא האלין בשמא דדוד ופסקו:
wpsqw ddwd bshma halyn pthgmya kkl nbl em wmlylw dwd ewlymy wathw
When David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal all those words in the name of David, and waited.

ואתיב נבל ית עבדי דוד ואמר מן דוד ומן בר ישי יומא דין דסגיאין עבדיא דערקין ודמטמרין גבר מן קדם רבוניה:
rbwnyh qdm mn gbr wdmTmryn derqyn ebdya dsgyayn dyn ywma yshy br wmn dwd mn wamr dwd ebdy yth nbl wathyb
Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants who break away from their masters these days.

ואסב ית מיכלי וית משתי וית שירותי דאתקינית לגזזי ואתן לגבריא דלא ידעת אי מנן אנון:
anwn mnn ay ydeth dla lgbrya wathn lgzzy dathqynyth shyrwthy wyth mshthy wyth mykly yth wasb
Shall I then take my bread, my water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men who I don’t know where they come from?”

ואתחזרו עולמי דוד לאורחתהון ותבו ואתו וחויאו ליה ככל פתגמיא האלין:
halyn pthgmya kkl lyh wkhwyaw wathw wthbw lawrkhthhwn dwd ewlmy wathkhzrw
So David’s young men turned on their way and went back, and came and told him all these words.

ואמר דוד לגברוהי זריזו גבר ית חרביה וזריזו גבר ית חרביה וזריז אף דוד ית חרביה וסליקו בתר דוד כארבע מאה גברא ומאתן אשתארו למטר מניא:
mnya lmTr ashtharw wmathn gbra mah karbe dwd bthr wslyqw khrbyh yth dwd ap wzryz khrbyh yth gbr wzryzw khrbyh yth gbr zryzw lgbrwhy dwd wamr
David said to his men, “Every man put on his sword!” Every man put on his sword. David also put on his sword. About four hundred men followed David, and two hundred stayed by the baggage.

ולאביגיל אתת נבל חוי עולמא חד מעולמיא למימר הא שלח דוד אזגדיא ממדברא לברכא ית רבוננא וקץ בהון:
bhwn wqts rbwnna yth lbrka mmdbra azgdya dwd shlkh ha lmymr mewlmya khd ewlma khwy nbl athth wlabygyl
But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master; and he insulted them.

וגבריא טבין לנא לחדא ולא אתנזיקנא ולא שגא לנא מדעם כל יומין די הלכנא עמהון כד הוינא שרן בחקלא:
bkhqla shrn hwyna kd emhwn hlkna dy ywmyn kl mdem lna shga wla athnzyqna wla lkhda lna Tbyn wgbrya
But the men were very good to us, and we were not harmed, and we didn’t miss anything as long as we went with them, when we were in the fields.

שור מקף הוו עלנא אף בלילי אף בימם כל יומין דהוינא עמהון רען ענא:
ena ren emhwn dhwyna ywmyn kl bymm ap blyly ap elna hww mqp shwr
They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
17
וכען דעי וחזי מה תעבדין ארי גמירא בישתא למיתי על רבוננא ועל כל ביתיה והוא גבר רשיעא מלמללא עמיה:
emyh mlmlla rshyea gbr whwa bythyh kl wel rbwnna el lmythy byshtha gmyra ary thebdyn mh wkhzy dey wken
Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master and against all his house, for he is such a worthless fellow that one can’t speak to him.”

ואוחיאת אביגיל ונסיבת מאתן גריצן דלחם ותרין גרבין דחמר וחמש עאן תכברא וחמש סאין קליא ומאה אתכלין דענבין יבישין ומאתן מנן דבלתא ושויאת על חמריא:
khmrya el wshwyath dbltha mnn wmathn ybyshyn denbyn athklyn wmah qlya sayn wkhmsh thkbra ean wkhmsh dkhmr grbyn wthryn dlkhm grytsn mathn wnsybth abygyl wawkhyath
Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread, two containers of wine, five sheep ready dressed, five seahs of parched grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.

ואמרת לעולמהא עברו קדמי הא אנא בתריכון אתיא ולבעלה נבל לא חויאת:
khwyath la nbl wlbelh athya bthrykwn ana ha qdmy ebrw lewlmha wamrth
She said to her young men, “Go on before me. Behold, I am coming after you.” But she didn’t tell her husband, Nabal.

והוה היא רכיבא על חמרא ונחתת בסטר טורא והא דוד וגברוהי נחתין לקדמותה וערעת יתהון:
ythhwn wereth lqdmwthh nkhthyn wgbrwhy dwd wha Twra bsTr wnkhthth khmra el rkyba hya whwh
As she rode on her donkey, and came down hidden by the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them.
21
ודוד אמר ברם לשקרא נטרית ית כל די לדין במדברא ולא שגא מכל די ליה מדעם ואתיב לי בישתא חלף טבתא:
Tbtha khlp byshtha ly wathyb mdem lyh dy mkl shga wla bmdbra ldyn dy kl yth nTryth lshqra brm amr wdwd
Now David had said, “Surely in vain I have kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained to him. He has returned me evil for good.

כדין יעביד אלהים לסנאי דוד וכדין יוסיף אם אשאיר מכל די ליה עד מנהר צפרא ידע מדע:
mde yde tspra mnhr ed lyh dy mkl ashayr am ywsyp wkdyn dwd lsnay alhym yebyd kdyn
God do so to the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that belongs to him by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall.”
23
וחזת אביגיל ית דוד ואוחיאת ואתרכינת מעל חמרא ונפלת לאפי דוד על אפהא וסגידת על ארעא:
area el wsgydth apha el dwd lapy wnplth khmra mel wathrkynth wawkhyath dwd yth abygyl wkhzth
When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got off her donkey, and fell before David on her face and bowed herself to the ground.

ונפלת על רגלוהי ואמרת בבעו עלי דילי רבוני חובא ותמלל כען אמתך קדמך ותשמע ית פתגמי אמתך:
amthk pthgmy yth wthshme qdmk amthk ken wthmll khwba rbwny dyly ely bbew wamrth rglwhy el wnplth
She fell at his feet and said, “On me, my lord, on me be the blame! Please let your servant speak in your ears. Hear the words of your servant.

לא כען ישוי רבוני ית לביה על גברא שטיא הדין על נבל ארי כשמיה כן הוא נבל שמיה וטפשותא עמיה ואנא אמתך לא חזתי ית עולמי רבוני דשלחתא:
dshlkhtha rbwny ewlmy yth khzthy la amthk wana emyh wTpshwtha shmyh nbl hwa kn kshmyh ary nbl el hdyn shTya gbra el lbyh yth rbwny yshwy ken la
Please don’t let my lord pay attention to this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him; but I, your servant, didn’t see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
26
וכען רבוני קים הוא יי וחיי נפשך די מנעך יי מלמשפך דם זכאי ולמפרק ידך לך וכען יהון כנבל סנאך ודתבעין על רבוני בישתא:
byshtha rbwny el wdthbeyn snak knbl yhwn wken lk ydk wlmprq zkay dm mlmshpk yy mnek dy npshk wkhyy yy hwa qym rbwny wken
Now therefore, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, since Yahweh has withheld you from blood guiltiness and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now therefore let your enemies and those who seek evil to my lord be as Nabal.
27
וכען תקרובתא הדא דאיתיאת אמתך לרבוני ותתיהב לעולמיא דמשמשין קדם רבוני:
rbwny qdm dmshmshyn lewlmya wththyhb lrbwny amthk daythyath hda thqrwbtha wken
Now this present which your servant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.
28
שבוק כען לחובי אמתך ארי קימא יקיים יי לרבוני מלכו קימא ארי קרבי עמא דיי רבוני מגיח ובישתא לא אשתכחת בך מיומך:
mywmk bk ashthkkhth la wbyshtha mgykh rbwny dyy ema qrby ary qyma mlkw lrbwny yy yqyym qyma ary amthk lkhwby ken shbwq
Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For Yahweh will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights Yahweh’s battles. Evil will not be found in you all your days.
29
וקם אנשא למרדפך ולמבעי למקטלך ותהא נפשא דרבוני גניזא בגנז חיי עלמא קדם יי אלהך וית נפש בעלי דבבך יפרחינה כמא דמפרחין אבנא בקלעא:
bqlea abna dmprkhyn kma yprkhynh dbbk bely npsh wyth alhk yy qdm elma khyy bgnz gnyza drbwny npsha wthha lmqTlk wlmbey lmrdpk ansha wqm
Though men may rise up to pursue you and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord will be bound in the bundle of life with Yahweh your God. He will sling out the souls of your enemies as from a sling’s pocket.
30
והוה כד יקיים יי לרבוני ככל דמליל לאיתאה טבתא עלך ויפקדינך למהוי מלכא על ישראל:
yshral el mlka lmhwy wypqdynk elk Tbtha laythah dmlyl kkl lrbwny yy yqyym kd whwh
It will come to pass, when Yahweh has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you prince over Israel,
31
ולא תהי דא לך ליצפא ולתקלת לב לרבוני ולמשפך דם זכאי מגן ולמפרק רבוני ליה וכד יוטיב יי לרבוני ותדכר ית אמתך:
amthk yth wthdkr lrbwny yy ywTyb wkd lyh rbwny wlmprq mgn zkay dm wlmshpk lrbwny lb wlthqlth lytspa lk da thhy wla
that this shall be no grief to you, nor offense of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself. When Yahweh has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”
32
ואמר דוד לאביגיל בריך יי אלהא דישראל דשלחך יומא דין לקדמותי:
lqdmwthy dyn ywma dshlkhk dyshral alha yy bryk labygyl dwd wamr
David said to Abigail, “Blessed is Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sent you today to meet me!
33
ובריך מדעיך ובריכא את דמנעתני יומא הדין מלמשפך דם זכאי ולמפרק ידי לי:
ly ydy wlmprq zkay dm mlmshpk hdyn ywma dmnethny ath wbryka mdeyk wbryk
Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you, who have kept me today from blood guiltiness, and from avenging myself with my own hand.
34
וברם קים הוא יי אלהא דישראל דמנעני מלאבאשא ליך ארי אלולא פון אוחית ואתית לקדמותי אלהין אשתאר לנבל עד מנהר צפרא ידע מדע:
mde yde tspra mnhr ed lnbl ashthar alhyn lqdmwthy wathyth awkhyth pwn alwla ary lyk mlabasha dmneny dyshral alha yy hwa qym wbrm
For indeed, as Yahweh the God of Israel lives, who has withheld me from harming you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there wouldn’t have been left to Nabal by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall.”
35
וקביל דוד מנה ית דאיתיאת ליה ולה אמר סקי לשלם לביתך חזי דקבילית מניך ונסבית אפיכי:
apyky wnsbyth mnyk dqbylyth khzy lbythk lshlm sqy amr wlh lyh daythyath yth mnh dwd wqbyl
So David received from her hand that which she had brought him. Then he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. Behold, I have listened to your voice and have granted your request.”
36
ואתת אביגיל לות נבל והא ליה משתיא בביתיה כמשתי מלכא ולבא דנבל שפיר עלוהי והוא רוי עד לחדא ולא חויאת ליה פתגם זעיר ורב עד מנהר צפרא:
tspra mnhr ed wrb zeyr pthgm lyh khwyath wla lkhda ed rwy whwa elwhy shpyr dnbl wlba mlka kmshthy bbythyh mshthya lyh wha nbl lwth abygyl wathth
Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house like the feast of a king. Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing until the morning light.
37
והוה בצפרא כד פג חמרא מנבל וחויאת ליה אתתיה ית פתגמיא האלין ומית לביה במעוהי והוא הוא כאבנא:
kabna hwa whwa bmewhy lbyh wmyth halyn pthgmya yth aththyh lyh wkhwyath mnbl khmra pg kd btspra whwh
In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things; and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
38
והוה לזמן עשרא יומין ותבר יי ית נבל ומית:
wmyth nbl yth yy wthbr ywmyn eshra lzmn whwh
About ten days later, Yahweh struck Nabal, so that he died.
39
ושמע דוד ארי מית נבל ואמר בריך יי דדן ית דין חיסודי מידא דנבל וית עבדיה מנע מלמעבד בישא וית בישת נבל אתיב יי ברישיה ושלח דוד ושאיל באביגיל למסבה ליה לאתו:
lathw lyh lmsbh babygyl wshayl dwd wshlkh bryshyh yy athyb nbl byshth wyth bysha mlmebd mne ebdyh wyth dnbl myda khyswdy dyn yth ddn yy bryk wamr nbl myth ary dwd wshme
When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed is Yahweh, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from evil. Yahweh has returned the evildoing of Nabal on his own head.” David sent and spoke concerning Abigail, to take her to himself as wife.
40
ואתו עבדי דוד לות אביגיל לכרמלא ומלילו עמה למימר דוד שלחנא לותיך למסביך ליה לאתו:
lathw lyh lmsbyk lwthyk shlkhna dwd lmymr emh wmlylw lkrmla abygyl lwth dwd ebdy wathw
When David’s servants had come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you, to take you to him as wife.”
41
וקמת וסגידת על אפהא על ארעא ואמרת הא אמתך לאמהו לאסחאה ריגלי עבדי רבוני:
rbwny ebdy rygly laskhah lamhw amthk ha wamrth area el apha el wsgydth wqmth
She arose and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said, “Behold, your servant is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.”

ואוחיאת וקמת אביגיל ורכיבת על חמרא וחמש עולימתהא דאזלין לקיבלה ואזלת בתר אזגדי דוד והות ליה לאתו:
lathw lyh whwth dwd azgdy bthr wazlth lqyblh dazlyn ewlymthha wkhmsh khmra el wrkybth abygyl wqmth wawkhyath
Abigail hurriedly arose and rode on a donkey with her five maids who followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

וית אחינועם נסיב דוד מיזרעאל והואה אף תרויהון ליה לנשין:
lnshyn lyh thrwyhwn ap whwah myzreal dwd nsyb akhynwem wyth
David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they both became his wives.
